The Walk to Emmaus offers today’s disciples a parallel opportunity to rediscover Christ’s presence in their lives, to gain fresh understanding of God’s transforming grace, and to form friendships that foster faith and support spiritual maturity. While Emmaus provides a pathway to the mountaintop of God’s love, it also supports pilgrims’ return to the world in the power of the Spirit to share the love they have received with a hurtful and hurting world.

Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

De Colores!

It’s hard to believe we are now in the Christmas season. As usual, during this time, I look back on the past year and I am amazed how quickly it has passed. But I also rejoice in the fact that God has given me another one. As the year progresses, we are faced with so many challenges. Life throws “stuff” at us from all directions, and our circumstances change as quickly as the seasons. We deal with the day to day issues of finances, health, family crisis, sickness, and even death. Each year is a continuance of the previous year, a virtual roller coaster ride with all the ups and downs, twists and turns, and hair raising events. I often ask myself; what is the purpose, what is the reason, what is the constant?

During this time of the year, I am reminded of God’s love for us. How He is the purpose, the reason and the constant. How only our Lord can be all these things to us, if we remember and reflect on the manger and the cross. If we truly believe that God’s purpose is to love us unconditionally, that Jesus is the reason for our salvation, and that the Holy Spirit is the constant in our lives, then we can always handle what the year provides. As Christ followers, we are reminded by our prayers, study and action; that we have become the disciples He commissioned us to be. This season of giving is often cluttered by the worldly giving practices. We tend to stray from the spiritual giving of charity, compassion and understanding.

This Christmas season, let’s review our service sheet (Reunion card). Answer the question, what have I done this year, so Christ will be better known and loved? What have we given back in spiritual gifts during the year to make a difference in someone’s life? I believe we’ll be surprised. We have touched others by our actions and witness. And we probably did so anonymously.

As this year ends, so does my blessing of being you Community Lay Director. It has been a quick year, a productive year and a promising year. I owe so much to my sisters and brothers on the Board. They have been dedicated to the task and we rejoice in the completion of several goals set at our January retreat. I am grateful to you, the community, for your support and commitment to the Walk to Emmaus and Chrysalis movements. Your kind words of encouragement and prayers have helped me through several very busy periods and leadership decisions. Together we have made great improvements to this community and the walk weekends. I look forward to continued service to our Lord through this ministry.

In closing, may each of you have a blessed Christmas season, enjoy your families, take in every possible worship service, and give thanks for the greatest gift ever given to mankind.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and his name will be called Wonderful...”
Your humble servant,

Scott

Loudoun Valley Emmaus held its first walk on Memorial Day Weekend in 1993. It has held four walks per year, two in late spring, and two in early November.

The area covered by the LoVE Community is primarily Loudoun County in Virginia, which is the top of the state from Dulles International Airport to West Virginia, and also Chantilly, Centreville, Manassas, Warrenton, and Winchester. Many of the Sand Hills Community, North Carolina, founding members walked with LoVE. We also have 3 citizens of the Slovak Republic in Europe who walked with us in Virginia.
